What's 911 in "Australian"?

... no ... really, what is it? In Norway it was 3 separate numbers for fire, police and ambulance - like I was ever going to remember that!

After Gary got home from work, we went out and bought him a major pimped out street bicycle. He has become very serious about bike riding and had brought over 3 mountain bikes, but has been interested in getting one, signed up for a 100K race yesterday and 'needed' it - so off we went.

It is, as I said, winter down here and it is COLD!! We got back and I was cold so Gary turned on his heat. About 2 minutes later the fire alarms start going off in the apartment. We were stumped. Did we do this? Do we smell smoke (no)? Gary opened the front door and our fellow apartment dwellers were milling about the lobby, so we knew it was more than our apartment.

One said she had been cooking something, all seemed as if they were going to ignore it. We looked at each other and decided we should at least do the responsible thing and go downstairs. We thought it was probably a false alarm and decided to use the elevator (a big no no in a fire). The elevator door 'pinged' open and that's when we heard the sirens. Decided maybe the stairs would be smarter ...

Off we went into the stair-well-of-no-return (once in the stair well, the only level you can get out on is the ground floor). The stair well was not smoky, so that was good, and the other floors did not sound as if their alarms were going off, so that was even better. At floor 6 Gary said maybe this wasn't such a good idea, but it was not a problem for me ... now going up 17 flights is another story.

Got downstairs to fire trucks and fire men. Of course I had my camera ...

These firemen were trying to get into the building and the people in the lobby were just staring at them! Gary walked over to scan his security fob - thus releasing the door.

We discovered that it was our neighbors cooking and that everything was fine. Decided to take the elevator back up!

These guys were milling about our floor lobby and we mentioned that the people they were trying to talk to or get into their apartment (who beat us since they used the elevator) were down in the main lobby. They said everything was fine. Whew!

I do not like fire and fire is my biggest fear in a high rise building because ... where do you go? Guess I should be responsible and find out what the emergency numbers are ...

Well that was all the excitement for this Thursday night. I am up because of that jet lag thing, but better go try to get some sleep.

Later dudes ...
