So Landon was looking over my shoulder and got SO excited: "Cool! How'd she do that? That's so coooool!......." My response, "I don't know. She's a photography whiz. She can do anything." So fess up for my Avatar crazed hubby, please.

Here goes:

1) cropped the photo to be half my face
2) used the lasso tool, drew around my eye and eyebrow and selected it to a different layer
3) used the transform tool to enlarge it and rotate it about 15 / 20 degrees and reposition it on my face
4) did steps 2 & 3 for my mouth
5) collapsed all three layers
6) selected just the white and iris of my eye, selected it to another layer and hid it
7) desaturated the photo
8) selected hue/saturation and changed the color to the blue
9) used the burn tool to darken around my eye, nose, cheek - and to add stripes to my forhead
10) used the dodge tool to highlight my cheek and nose
11) duplicated my eye that I had hid
12) desaturated it and changed the color to a wee bit lighter blue
13) used the burn tool to darken the interior part by the nose
14) jumped to the other copy of the eye
15) changed the opacity to 50%
16) used the transform tool to increase the size of the pupil to fill the eyesocket
17) changed the opacity back to 100%
18) flattened everything
19) selected a small brush and set the paint color to white
20) drew random dots on my face
21) added a special effects layer of 'outer glow' at a light blue for the dots I just added
22) collapsed it all into one layer
23) saved it
24) voilĂ  - an avatar is born ...

(this is a condensed version but pretty much the steps I used)
